It is not immediately obvious that this is possible. There is some very decent write protection in play here - you can't delete the partitions in Windows or Linux, you can't format in Safe Mode, you can't even use low level format tools or the HP USB Format tool.
You have to go deeper. Continue at your own risk... (below the bars)
WARNINGS
There is some evidence of newer drives being bricked. Some things you shouldn't do:- Do not use the formatter.zip on the latest 2014 version TOSHIBA USB 3.0 with the 2251-03
- Do not try to force a certain BIN file onto the drives firmware using MPALL
EDIT 9 - 3 step process for 2013
This may seem a bit long winded, but I think it might be a good way for 2013 media kit:
- Run MPALL 363 c (as per settings below) (make sure its revision C)
- Run Silicon Power Formatter
- Format using Windows
Recieved Brand New USB's For Autodesk Design Suite 2013 Premium
IC version 2251-67
This is how i reformatted them
Download MPALL_F1_9000_v363_00 and MPALL_F1_9000_v363_0C
Run Getinfo
open MPALL_F1_9000_v363_00
Click Update
In Advanced settings
set Controller to PS2251-67 and FC1-FC2 to 01
In Firmware tick 'Do ISP' 'Erase Code Block' and 'Auto ISP'
In Partition Seeting Tab
Set Number of Partition to 1
Save and Press Start
This will Fail
Close MPALL_F1_9000_v363_00
run getinfo in MPALL_F1_9000_v363_0C folder
and open MPALL_F1_9000_v363_0C
Update again
go into advanced settings
set Controller to PS2251-62 and FC1-FC2 to 01
Untick all boxes in firmware
In Flash Settings Tab Check
Auto Detect
Preformat
Erase Flash
In Partition Setting Tab
set 'No of Partitions to 1'
save and press start
EDIT 8 - For 2013 media (Thanks Peter in the Comments)I tried Formatter_SiliconPower - fail. UFD Recover Tool - Fail.

EDIT 7 - For PS2251-67 (From Ryan Ruta in the Comments)
I found a solution for the latest drive that I received with the PS2251-67 Controller.
1. Download the file from this link... http://www.silicon-power.com/UFD_Recover_Tool/UFD_Recover_Tool.rar and extract it to your drive.
2. Plug in your USB drive.
3. Run the format tool from the download.
4. Unplug your USB drive and plug it back in.
5. Format the drive using the Windows format tool (or other tool of your choice) as NTFS.
EDIT - 5 From the comments, for DaneElec zMate USB 32 GB:
The software I downloaded from site: http://tagievara.narod.ru/pages/programs/flash/smi.html
Direct URL: http://depositfiles.com/files/acu0018d9
1. Run sm32Xtest.exe.
2. Press "Scan USB" button.
3. Press "Start" button.
After few minutes the device is ready to use.
EDIT 6 - for Autodesk Product Design Suite Ultimate 2013
The installation USB flash memory (key, dongle) used for distribution of Autodesk Design Suites is a read-only device and cannot be overwritten or formatted with standard methods.
If you want to "misuse" this USB memory to store your data you can "hack" it with internal reformatting, make it a standard R/W device.
E.g. Autodesk Product Design Suite Ultimate 2013 uses the USB key of the type "DaneElec zMate Aero" (blue) - see Dane-Elec - with the controller SM3254Q AE.
To overwrite this USB key you can use the utility SMI ReFixInfo. This tool can be downloaded here (file MI_ReFixInfo_1_0_0_1.7z).
Start the downloaded EXE and click "Reset Write Protect", W.P select Un-Write Protect. Then click Start.
Be warned! Make sure you have a backup copy of your original installation files. This procedure may lead to a damage of your USB key and is completely unsupported.

via CAD Forum - How to re-format the Autodesk instalation USB key?
I dismantled a spare USB key that we had received for Building Design Suite Premium. This wasn't such an easy thing to do...but hopefully you won't have to, now that I have done it for you!

I already knew that it was ostensibly a Toshiba flash drive, code PA3708, 32 gb (have a look on the case of yours, see if it is the same).
However, what I really needed to know was the IC, or controller chip brand / make / model. Dismantling the key told me it was a:
PHISON 2251-60-5
Ok, from here I found this page, which led me to download the Phison MPALL utility bundle. You will need to download it too:
Phison_MPALL_v3.20.0B
Read on below the bars...
Also, if you're looking for a flash drive or an external drive, try looking here with coupons
EDIT-1 You may be able to find updated versions of MPALL via Google Search. I am unsure what the copyright / usage license situation is with this program (deleted some links).
EDIT-2 Some people (in 2012) have had more success using USB Flash Tools (v2.10) USBFlashTools210.zip instead of the workflow with MPALL. After downloading this program, there is an 'Erase' option that may work ... try it and post your results in the comments. Read more at USB Flash Tools
EDIT-3 Others seem to have had success with Silicon Power Formatter, or preformat.exe
EDIT-4 You may want to try Formatter first - Craig at iRevit has hosted the Formatter.zip and tested it (May 2012)
From here, it was a bit of trial and error. This is how you do it:
- First of all, open GetInfo.exe
Put in your drive letter and click 'Read'. You should be able to get an output that looks something like this:
- Next, open MPALL_F1_9000_v320_0B.exe
- Click 'Update'. Your drive should show up here.
- Click 'Setting'
- Choose 'Advanced Setting' and 'New Setting' and OK.
- The controller that I had to choose was the PS2251-90 (which is a bit weird, because the chip said it was a 2251-60, but that didn't work). So, anyway, here are the settings I chose:
- Controller = PS2251-90
- FC1-FC2 = 01
- Go to next tab - Flash Setting
- I think leave the defaults but tick the 'Erase Flash'
- Next tab - Partition Setting
- No. of partition = 1
- Choose 'Removable Disk'
- And once you are done, click 'Save'
- Then you should be able to click 'Start' and away you go! You should see some formatting happen, then you will have to remove the drive and plug it in again...then you should have a nice 32 gb USB drive to use.
Note - the settings are saved in the MP.INI file. Here is what my MP.INI file looked like:
[PenDriveMP]
IC Type=PS2251-90
[Parameter Mark]
Parameter Type=F1_MP_21
[Customize Info]
USB VID=0x13FE
USB PID=0x3D00

Burner Erase All=1
Wafer Erase All=1
set1667=0x00
[Advance]
Tick=0
FC1=0xFF
FC2=0x01
[Firmware]
ISP=0
You can check and see if yours looks similar, or even load these settings and try them.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS PROCEDURE MAY COMPLETELY BRICK OR DESTROY YOUR USB DRIVE. Make sure you have a backup of the software if you are going to attempt this.
So, how did you go? Do you feel pretty good about yourself? Really, that USB key would eventually become redundant, so we are making an environmentally wise choice by recycling it, aren't we?
thanks for this tip.

ReplyDeleteHere is something a bit weird - after copying the Autodesk data from the supposedly 32 gb drive, Windows Explorer reports the properties of the copied data Size on Disk at 38.0 gb! Why is this? Something to do with the allocation or sector size?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I compressed the copied data using some pretty decent settings on 7-zip and got it down to 15.7 gb...
Worked on Autodesk Product Design Suite Ultimate and Product Design Suite Premium 32GB USB Keys :)

Enable Format NTFS and Reset Write Protect (un-writeprotect)

It is exactly what i did and it works.
DeleteBunt you have to do it for one first then uncheck the box and check the second otherwise the program does not respond.

ReplyDeleteTried all programs listed here. Does not seem to work on Plant Design Suite Premium 2012 (16gb).
ReplyDelete[EDIT] MPALL_v3.29.0B works on Plant Design Suite Premium (16gb).
ReplyDeleteAwesome, thanks!! After much searching I found your instructions, and it works perfectly. 4 32GB and 1 16GB now can be put to good use!
ReplyDeleteIs there an updated version of MPALL greater than v3.33.0C that supports the PS2251-67 controller? I just received my 64GB drive from Autodesk and that is the controller on this flash drive.
ReplyDeletefor PS2251-67 No MPTool freely available

ReplyDeleteHello from beautiful D.C. (Denver, Colorado). Worked great on my BDSU 2012 32GB flash. Rock on!!
ReplyDeleteNo luck with my BDS Premium 32gb USB Drive - has anyone got anytips for getting this unlocked?
ReplyDeleteI used Phison_MPALL_v3.60.0B for a BDSP 2013 32gb. I didn't really tweak the settings, just found the drive in MPALL and hit 'Start'. After that, I re-formatted with Windows to FAT32 anyway.
ReplyDeletehttp://uploaded.net/file/g7u5dols
ReplyDeleteFormatter did the trick. No config, nothing at all except to unzip the files and execute.
Thanks,it's perfect..^^
ReplyDeleteAt this Time a new USB Hardware will be shipped named DaneElec zMate USB 32 GB Device. The known Tools are not running, any suggestions ?
ReplyDeleteInside my USB Drive (also named DaneElec zMate USB 32 GB) I found a controller SM3254Q AE, produced by SMI. I used smi_mptool_v2.03.34_v7_j1118_3254ae and now it works.
DeleteThe software I downloaded from site: http://tagievara.narod.ru/pages/programs/flash/smi.html
Direct URL: http://depositfiles.com/files/acu0018d9
1. Run sm32Xtest.exe.
2. Press "Scan USB" button.
3. Press "Start" button.
After few minutes the device is ready to use.
Have fun :)
Hi All,
DeleteIf i want clone BDSP2013 to BDSP2012 USB
What kind software can be use?
My Autodesk Building Design Suite Premium also came on a DaneElec zMate USB 32 GB USB drive. I downloaded the tool via the link above and it worked perfect.
DeleteThanks!!
thanks from france (again) worked on autodesk 2012 32GB USB key with Phison 3.20.0B
ReplyDeleteSMI_MpTool worked like a charm on my 32gb BDSPRM key.
ReplyDeleteGreat work guys and gals! Thanks a bunch
I used http://www.irevit.com/images/Storage/Formatter.zip and it worked perfectly, first time. Thanks so much, and thanks to Craig at iRevit. I am so grateful for you people taking the time to post this sort of information.
ReplyDeleteThanks loads! Worked like a charm, now I have a useful usb drive working. What a pity u arent' near but u deserve a beer immediately
ReplyDeletebest regards
Toshiba miniUSB 16GB > use formatter.zip.
ReplyDeleteAfter that, use a common format from Windows.
It works. Good luck! :)
Formatter_SiliconPower.exe is working on my 16GB. thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThis worked a treat for a 16gb drive branded "OPTIMA" bought from Sainsbury. The drive had been used on a linux pc and suddenly went dead. Using windows 7 "manage computer - disk management" utility showed "no media" reported for the drive. So, not possible to format or do anything with it. Cracking the case off revealed a Hynix memory and Phison controller. Googling brought up your page and following your instructions brought the drive back to life! Well done and thank you. PS my mp.ini file was almost the same as yours, only difference was USB PID=0x3600 and TICK = 1.
ReplyDeleteuse this method for my 16 GB Toshiba Flash Drive and it works.
ReplyDeleteThank You so much.
Worked like a charm for the 2013 design suite ultimate. 16GB Toshiba flash. Just changed the controller to -60...
ReplyDeleteThank you very much Luke, worked without any flaws on a 32GB and a 16GB.
ReplyDeleteGetInfo gave the exact same info as your screenshot but the case on the drive itself says "16GB." So, I proceeded with the same settings that you used in the blog (I did not have to use -60). It worked, and it formatted as a 16GB drive (14.91 usable). But, what is interesting is it had 28GB worth of software on it which made me originally think it was a 32GB drive even though it was labeled 16GB.
ReplyDeleteHas anyone else seen this?
Thanks!
Mil gracias, había probado un montón de programas pero ninguno había funcionado, pero este funciono a la perfección, estoy muy agradecido.
ReplyDelete100% satisfecho
Just formatted a BDSP flash!!! Awesome, recycling is so much fun!! Thanks for cracking this for us other geeks :-)
ReplyDeletewell, are they back to Toshiba? We got a 64gb USB here - Got PMALL v3.63.0C. It sees the unit as ICVersion 2251-67, FWVersion 06.00.10. MP Version says v1.05.1B
ReplyDeleteIn the end, it gets me "Format File System Error. returned 0x5020"
Any ideas?
Thanks lot ...............i did successfully format its working fine
ReplyDelete2013 Entertainment Creation Suite ultimate. 16GB Toshiba Flash, worked like a charm.
ReplyDeleteAnyone else lucky with a 64GB? Keep getting "Format File System Error. returned 0x5020" no matter what I try... TIA.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know what is the "PVC 0 security key" binary file that seems to be mandatory when trying to flash a Phison 2251-63 using MPALL v3.63.0C ?
ReplyDeleteCan I build it on my own?
Where did you get the MPALL 3.63 tool?
DeleteOk, I just made a really unexpected discovery with one of my 3 32GB Autodesk USBs using Ubuntu as the operating system.
ReplyDeleteThe first two I went through the tedious process detailed above of downloading the software on a Windows based PC then formatting.
Now, here's the interesting bit:
For my third USB I did not have access to my Windows PC but had my Ubuntu 12.04 laptop with me. I plugged in the USB, "Unmounted" it first then simply formatted it... took less than 3 seconds.
I can now reformat to any file system and operates and functions without any issues on my Windows PC just like it was always writeable.
Can someone else confirm this that I'm not going crazy? I'm sure you could achieve the same if you had a Ubuntu Live Boot Disk.
I would like to know if other Linux distributions can also format in the same way?
I'll hopefully have another USB soon that I can test with on Ubuntu or other suggested OS.
Formatter worked a charm - nice work!
ReplyDeleteBy accident we got a couple more drives than expected... 36 of them! all 16 GB drives. keeping one for storage as intended the rest was kind of redundant.
ReplyDeleteFirst of thank you for this page!
With a little effort we everyone at the office can get some storage
http://postimage.org/image/efuf5h7yj/
With so many drives it is the best way to get impressions on what can go wrong. here are the results:
- Most of the drives worked instantly with the sp_llformatter_v2_11_3_0 tool. formatted as fat32.
- Some (between 5 and 10 drives) were not write protected and repartitioned. It needed formatting in windows
- 3 drives failed. Error "format failed -2", the Phison_MPALL_v3.20_ps2251 utility recognizes the drive but gives error "timing error" These drives have a 16 gb raw partition and are still write protected. These drives light up blue instead of red.
Repairing the blue flashing drives are identical when examined with ChipGenius.
sucess rate 91% I think is is worth the try for everyone not using the drive!
Formatter worked a charm - nice work!
ReplyDeleteTerimakasih
has anyone had any luck with a PS2251-67, I've downloaded all the PSALL versions I can find, up to V3.63 and get varying errors. V3.63 gives me the error IDBLK file version check error. I saw mentioned somewhere on another forum to include the IDBLK_TIMING.dll version number in the settings, but I have no idea how to do that. Any help / ideas would be much appreciated.
ReplyDeletei got the same problem with the PS2251-67
DeleteIt took some searching, but I found a solution for the latest drive that I received with the PS2251-67 Controller.
Delete1.
6. Enjoy!
Nice work Ryan! I'll add it to the main post.
DeletePS2551-67...UFD tool formatted the flash drive, then on re-insert and windows format to NTFS. Error Write protected. No luck? Am I missing a setting on either the UFD or windows format?
Deleteusb hub power exceeded after doing tips from ryan , help me
DeleteThe 64GB drive I got, which shows as PS2251-67 won't get formatted with the UFD recover tool. I get a Low Level Format FAILED.
ReplyDeleteAny ideas?
PDSP & PDSU 2013 - I used MPPALL 6.63 from http://ap.upan.cc/plus/download.php?open=2&id=2645&uhash=4155e7d87259de4505255e4a
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't plain sailing though!
Firstly I was getting an IDBLK file version check error so had to type the version number in the IDBLK_TIMING.dll Version box (Settings > Advanced > Other Setting).
Then I was getting "Format File System Error. returned 0x5020" so I ticked Do ISP, Erase Code Block, and Auto ISP on the IC_FW tab (again you need to choose Settings > Advanced).
Hope this helps somebody, and thanks to all previous posts... I'd have never done it without you!

Has anybody an idea to erase this USB-Flash-Device?
The new 2014 usb is a 3.0
ReplyDeleteDo not use the formatter.zip on the latest 2014 version TOSHIBA USB 3.0 with the 2251-03.
ReplyDeleteI did, mine is dead now.
Tried lots of settings before in the Phison MPALL v3.63.0C, none of them worked.
Has anyone had any success with the 2014 drives yet?
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone have access to the new versions of MPALL/firmware files for the 2014 drives? If so please post -- thanks.
ReplyDeleteYes can someone let me know about the 2014 flash drives as well please.
ReplyDeleteany updates yet on how to reformat 2014 usb keys?
ReplyDeleteUse the tool: TRANSCEND-SM32X-PV1.0.89-BY-TAGARAZ-M0104 from this site: http://www.usbdev.ru/files/smi/ for the 64gb 2013 usb
ReplyDeleteNo luck on the 2014 drives yet?
ReplyDeleteRegarding 2014 drives - received a BDSP 2014 USB today. It reports at about 20gb in Windows. It seems that the required MP tool would be:
ReplyDeleteMP Ver. MPALL v3.64.0E
However, I don't know where to obtain this.
ICVersion 2251-03
DeleteHoping for a download location for MPALL v3.64.0E. Been ordering 2014 BDSP at a rate of 1 a day in anticipation of a solution.
ReplyDeleteAlso, been playing around with whats available to try to crack the 2014s and can confirm...formatter will brick it. Gonna hang on to it though and see if v3.64 can revive it before i throw it away.
The 2251-03's are reporting as USB 3.0. Stick it in a USB3 slot, use MPALL v363, do low level format. Then, remove stick, replace and use Windows format.
ReplyDeleteWorks like it says on the box.
Simon,
ReplyDeleteCould you be so kind, and explain it step-by-step, like 'for dummies'?
;-)
